OTHER PROJECTS

Besides games and music, I write a lot of new systems for games like Dungeons & Dragons, and a lot of various in-game projects with Minecraft. This is the section for all my miscellaneous work.

COSMIC CHEF

Intergalactic Cooking

One of the first games that I worked on, Cosmic Chef is a mobile cooking game set in outer space, where the player has to follow an intergalactic recipe to please the panel of chefs.

The design of the game revolved around Cooking Mama style mini games, where the player was able to swipe and tap on their mobile device, completing tasks like chopping up space veggies or mixing ingredients together.

One of the coolest things we did for this project was in the way we combined practical and technical design for the sounds. We decided to have a handful of people record various phrases in different tones, and then we sped them up and reversed them, making them sound like gibberish that alien chefs might speak like.

TACET

A Hearing Impaired Rhythm Game

Tacet was a mobile game that my peers and I were challenged to design something around a physical or mental disability. I have always had a huge passion for music, and thought about what it would be like to design a rhythm game for those that were hearing impaired.

The game consisted of a Guitar Hero-like screen, where notes would fall to a "strum" area to the beat of the music. The player simply had to tap the notes once they reached the bar at the bottom, earning them points. If they didn't tap, or tapped too soon, they would not gain any points.

The challenge was to make the game decrease in volume to almost mute at certain points, and enhance the visual and haptic feedback to test if players could still keep rhythm without hearing the music at full volume. I did this by cranking up the visual effects, and adding a vibration when each note passed the bar.

Overall for the little experiment that it was, it was a pretty neat success. It seemed that players could indeed adjust their playing to rely on touch and sight, rather than just sound once the music diminished.

HAVEN

Shifting Survival

A physical prototype that eventually made its way to the digital realm, Haven was a small project that I worked on to test my tactile design principles. It is a "Sorry" style board game, where players move pawns over nodes, trying to get as close to the center as they can. Along the way, they can gather resources by landing on certain tiles, to then spend on certain actions. Additionally, they could encounter harsh randomized events, like losing a certain amount of resource, or freezing their movement for a turn.

The kicker of the game, and the core of its design, revolve (quite literally) around the spinning game board. The players only have a set number of turns to make it towards the center, because a fierce storm is ravaging the outer rings, and every 5 turns, it grows closer. If a player is caught out in the storm, they would lose a life. Lose all your lives and that's game over. But to add an interesting challenge, the board continually rotated every other turn. This meant that paths constantly changed, and if you weren't quick, you would be stuck on the outside.

The whole experience tested my creation in a physical space, and saw some really interesting strategic design emerge as players tried to find ways to counter the randomness of the setting.

MUSIC

The following section is a list of tracks that I've worked on for a variety of game and entertainment projects.

MINECRAFT

Minecraft has always been a huge passion of mine. Since its release I have used it to create maps, adventures, and fun experiences for myself and others.

Currently I'm working on a Tutorial series of videos to help the average player understand the wonder of command blocks and how to use them to create amazing things like custom bosses!

Recently, a few friends and I also successfully recreated the game Ultimate Werewolf in Minecraft with command blocks as well.

D&D SYSTEMS

I love tabletop games. Give me a pen, paper, and dice, and I'll be happy for hours. There are a lot of systems out there like D&D, Pathfinder, Burning Wheel, etc. that are all great intros for newcomers to the ttrpg genre

The great thing about these systems, is because they are frameworks, they can be changed and added to as needed. I'm currently working on adding new systems into D&D 5e that I think help balance some homebrew actions and events.

It's still a large work in progress, but the link to the Homebrewery can be found below!
